Why is standardization important?
Standardization in a data center is a tool to reduce costs and labor:
Vendor relations. Working with too many vendors can cause confusion from a billing, technical support, and interpersonal relations perspective. A single central point of contact simplifies these processes.
Knowledge (Know how), if the client already owns equipment from a certain brand, it assumes that there is already knowledge about them, so, in new implementations, technicians will not have to go through the learning curve to operate and maintain the equipment.
Maintenance contracts, by having several pieces of equipment of the same brand, volume negotiations can be made with the manufacturer with the goal of reducing maintenance costs.
Parts and pieces, the client can purchase parts and pieces in bulk or by volumes that can serve all the equipment.
Scheduled upgrades, as soon as the useful lifespan of this equipment comes to an end, the client can define a single scheduled purchase to renew their inventory. There is no need to deal with different lifespans for different equipment.
Interoperability, by selecting equipment from the same manufacturer, interoperability between new and existing equipment is guaranteed, and in many cases, functionalities can also be exploited that could not be achieved with different manufacturers.
Troubleshooting, in the event of a failure, it is always easier to deal with a single manufacturer to return to the normal operation of the system in the shortest possible time. When there is more than one manufacturer, fault resolution times can be extended.
